Shoulder Impingement Syndrome is a clinical condition that occurs due to mechanical impingement of the rotator cuff tendon beneath the anteroinferior portion of the acromion. This condition is often seen in aging adults. With impingement syndrome, pain is persistent and it affects everyday activities. Repetitive overhead activity of the shoulder is a risk factor for shoulder impingement syndrome. Examples include: painting, lifting, swimming, tennis etc.
Symptoms
Pain, weakness and loss of movement at the shoulder region. The pain is often worsened by shoulder overhead movement and may occur at night, especially if the patient is lying on the affected shoulder.
Treatment
Usually, a period of rest is sufficient to heal the affected region. Medication is provided, if required. A period of rest along with proper medications and simple stretching exercises are often enough to repair the damaged tissues. In case the pain aggravates, anthroscopic surgery may be recommended.
